RD Tax Calculator — Worked Simulation (Not Just the Bank Rate)

People search RD tax calculator because bank apps show maturity — not slab tax. This page is a fixed number walkthrough. The live tool is the RD calculator.

Primary tool: RD calculator — Apply tax · Apply inflation · Related: TDS & real yield explainer · FD tax simulation

Disclaimer: Illustrative math. Slabs, cess, TDS thresholds, and bank compounding rules change. Verify with a CA before filing.

What an RD tax calculator must show (3 layers)

  1. Bank maturity — sum of instalments + interest (quarterly compounding on each deposit is common).
  2. After slab tax — interest portion taxed at your marginal rate; principal is not “profit.”
  3. Today’s rupees — inflation-adjusted purchasing power of what you keep.

If you only see layer 1, you are comparing brochure RDs — not money you can spend.

Worked simulation: ₹10,000/mo · 6.5% · 5 years · 30% slab

Total principal locked = 60 × ₹10,000 = ₹6,00,000. Interest depends on exact compounding; use the live calculator for precision. Illustrative sequence:

Step What to read Approx. figure
1. You deposit Sum of instalments ₹6,00,000
2. Pre-tax maturity Bank / Post Office style number ~₹7.0L–₹7.2L (interest ~₹1.0L–₹1.2L)
3. Tax on interest @30% Slab on interest only ~₹30k–₹36k tax on that interest band
4. After tax you keep Maturity minus tax on interest Materially below the bank headline
5. At 6% inflation Purchasing power of post-tax corpus Real yield often thin or negative

Run it live: Open the RD calculator. Set monthly ₹10,000, rate 6.5%, tenure 5 years. Keep Apply tax on at 30%. Then turn on Apply inflation at 6%. Read bank maturity → after tax → real — in that order.

TDS is not your final tax

Banks may withhold TDS when annual RD interest crosses the notified threshold. That credit shows in Form 26AS. Your slab still decides the bill: if you are in 30%, TDS at 10% is only a down payment. The RD calculator’s slab toggle models the final drag; the TDS guide explains the paperwork side.

Same RD, three slabs (flip tax only)

Slab What changes Action in calculator
10%Lightest tax on interestSet slab 10% · Apply tax on
20%Middle dragSet 20% · watch “after tax you keep”
30%Heaviest — often kills real yieldSet 30% · then add inflation

Do not re-enter the instalment when comparing slabs. One flip teaches more than three brochure screenshots.

RD tax calculator vs FD tax calculator

Both tax interest at slab. FD is one lump sum; RD is many monthly deposits with different start dates for compounding. Use FD tax simulation for fixed deposits and this RD flow for instalment savers — then compare post-tax, post-inflation outcomes side by side if you are choosing where ₹10k/mo should go.

Common mistakes

  • Treating TDS deducted as “tax already fully paid.”
  • Comparing RD rates to SIP returns without tax or inflation on the RD side.
  • Planning a 5–7 year goal only on pre-tax maturity.
  • Using annual rate math instead of the bank’s compounding convention — trust the calculator’s RD engine.

Frequently asked questions

  • Where do I run an RD tax calculator?

On the SmartFinance RD calculator. This article is the worked sequence with fixed example numbers.

  • Is RD interest fully taxable?

Yes — at your income slab. TDS may apply separately when interest crosses the bank threshold.

  • RD tax calculator vs FD tax calculator?

Same tax idea, different cash-flow math. Use RD for monthly instalments; FD for a lump-sum deposit.
