FD Tax Calculator India — Simulate Interest Tax & Inflation

This is not a lecture on tax law. It is a number walkthrough: enter a deposit, apply your slab, turn on inflation, and read what you keep. Use the same steps in the free tool below.

Open the simulator: FD calculator → turn on Apply tax + Apply inflation · Related: why headline rates mislead · RD calculator

Disclaimer: Illustrative math only. Slabs, cess, and TDS thresholds change — verify with a CA before filing.

What you will simulate (3 numbers)

  1. Bank maturity — what the passbook shows (pre-tax).
  2. After-tax maturity — interest reduced by your slab.
  3. Today’s rupees — same corpus after inflation (purchasing power).

Search queries like “fd tax calculator” and “tax on fd interest calculator” are asking for exactly this sequence — not a definition of TDS.

Worked simulation: ₹5 lakh · 7% · 5 years · 30% slab

Assume a cumulative bank FD at ~7% p.a. (your bank rate will differ). Approximate outcomes:

Step What to read Approx. figure
1. Deposit Principal you lock ₹5,00,000
2. Pre-tax maturity Bank / brochure number ~₹7.0L (interest ~₹2.0L)
3. Tax on interest @30% Slab drag on interest only ~₹60,000 tax
4. Post-tax you keep Maturity after tax on interest ~₹6.4L
5. At 6% inflation Purchasing power of that corpus Feels closer to ~₹4.8L today

Run it live: In the FD calculator, set amount ₹5,00,000, rate 7%, tenure 5 years. Open “See what you keep after tax”, set slab to 30%, toggle Apply tax and Apply inflation (try 6%). Read the return ladder: Bank → After tax → Real.

Same deposit, three slabs (compare the tax drag)

Interest is taxable at your marginal slab. Holding rate and tenure fixed, only the slab changes the “after tax” step:

Slab on interest Approx. tax on ~₹2L interest What to do in the calculator
10% ~₹20,000 Set tax slab to 10% · Apply tax on
20% ~₹40,000 Set tax slab to 20% · Apply tax on
30% ~₹60,000 Set tax slab to 30% · Apply tax on

Flip the slab slider once — do not re-enter the deposit. That is the point of a tax-aware FD calculator.

Add inflation (the second toggle)

Queries like “fd calculator with inflation” want purchasing power, not another brochure rate. After tax is on:

  • Set inflation to 5%, then 6%, then 7%.
  • Watch the Real step on the ladder and “in today’s money”.
  • If real return turns near zero or negative, the FD is a parking tool — not a wealth tool — for that horizon.

Pair with the conceptual guide: why the headline FD rate is not your real return.

5-minute checklist (do this in the tool)

  1. Open fd-calculator.html.
  2. Enter your real deposit, rate from the bank rate card, and tenure.
  3. Expand See what you keep after tax.
  4. Turn on Apply tax · set your slab.
  5. Turn on Apply inflation · set a CPI guess (5–7%).
  6. Read Bank → After tax → Real. Decide only after that third number.

Tax-saving FD note (80C)

“Tax saving FD calculator” searches often mean 5-year tax-saver FDs under Section 80C. Those get a deduction on the deposit (within the ₹1.5L 80C ceiling), but interest is still taxable at slab. Simulate the interest tax the same way — do not treat the 80C lock-in as tax-free interest like PPF.

For 80C trade-offs with equity, see PPF vs ELSS for 80C.

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I calculate tax on FD interest in India?

Interest = maturity − principal. Tax ≈ interest × your slab. Use the FD calculator with Apply tax on so you do not hand-calc compounding.

  • Is an FD tax calculator different from a maturity calculator?

Yes. Maturity alone is the bank number. Tax + inflation toggles show what you keep and what it buys.

  • What inputs do I need?

Amount, rate, tenure, slab, and (optional) inflation %. That is the full simulation set.
